About Us

Dear Friend:

Welcome to the 2012 Journey Through African American History Resource Guide and Calendar.

Six years ago we embarked on a mission to create a calendar that would serve as a fundraising vehicle for Historically Black Colleges and Universities, many of which have been victimized by the downward spiraling economy.  We continue to accomplish that mission year after year, contributing thousands of dollars to HBCU’s.  Along with our mission, our goal is to provide you with a resource guide and calendar, filled with a diversity of facts and notable personalities of every genre, that tells the rich stories of yesterday’s and today’s outstanding contributors to our African American culture.

This is truly a Journey through African-American History.  The journey begins with our Historically Black Colleges and Universities, each with a rich history and an earnest desire to produce the best and the brightest.  The journey explores our proud heritage and our many accomplishments as a people.  The journey continues with you, our patrons and supporters.  On behalf of the Black History Educational Network, I am so humbled that you have embarked on this journey with us.  Whether this is your sixth HBCU calendar or your first,  you have contributed to these storied institutions that produce the men and women who enhance our future.

As we continue the journey, we’ve picked up a new look.  What began as an HBCU Calendar has evolved into a powerful African American resource guide, filled with facts you can use throughout the year.  For your convenience, we’ve categorized these facts to give you fingertip access to every important date, historical figure and etraordinary accomplishment in African American History.  As you go through the pages, you will find that is is also a creative educational tool for all ages.

We have come a long way, and we are grateful to our friend and partner, Walgreens, who has supported our national fundraising program since its inception.  Each time you purchase a calendar, Walgreens gives back one dollar to the profiled schools. Along the way, we have picked up additonal partners for distributions and that initiative continues to expand into national grocery store chains and local school districts across the country.

I’d love to hear you ideas about any events, topics or people you would like to see included in future resource guides.  Please e-mail me at tracey@blackhistoryhbcucalendar.com or visit our Black History Calendar page on Facebook.  I look forward to hearing from you.

Respectfully yours,
Tracey D. Alston, President
Black History Educational Network
